Dinner and a Movie

Final Image
Title: A Moment in Time
Digital Photography
Inspired by the movie Back to the Future

Artist Statement
The photograph reflects themes of nostalgia and time. The objects chosen help to reflect these themes. The old dual-sided clock portrays the theme of time, and the plate is an old thrifted plate, which brings in nostalgia. The lighting of the photo brings in the feeling of nostalgia as well. The red reflecting off the silverware and on the butter in the bowl brings attention to these items and creates a warm/ cozy feeling. The grainy quality of the photo brings in a vintage aspect, which further reflects the period and nostalgia.

Research #1
- Behind the movie: Producer Gale explains that he was going through his father's yearbook and began to wonder if they would have been friends, and how his life would be if it were at that time. This is where the concept of the movie came from

The DeLorean blows smoke in a parking lot in Back to the Future (1985).

Research #2
- Quote from Producer Gale"There's that great moment when Marty comes back to 1985 at the end of the first movie, and the town square of 1985, it looks like hell. You got the bum sleeping on the bench, and you got the adult bookstore, and the 1955 town square park is now paved over as a parking lot. He comes back and says, 'Everything looks great!' But it's only great to him because that's his world, he's back in his own familiar world," Gale adds. "We were able to just tell this time-travel story and make it not about changing history but making it a human story about something that everybody in the world has wondered: 'What did my parents do on their first date?' It just connects with everybody."

Reflection Statement

The three sculptures visually communicate whimsicality. While exploring the materials to build the sculptures, I wanted to focus on pattern and silhouette because they convey an emotion. I decided to include spirals and bright pink. I felt the work was lacking experimentation so I added parts like the inked duct tape on Reflection to use the materials in a new way. The making of this work exposed new ideas such as problem solving during a creative project.

Building Inspiration A

Cathedral Basilica, 1797

History of Building:

  •  The cathedral of the Basilica was first built in 1797
  •  The building caught fire in 1887
  •  Henry Flagler helped pay for the reconstruction of the cathedral after the fire, along with a six-story bell tower that was a new addition
  •  The cathedral has 18th-century Spanish Renaissance Architecture

Building Inspiration B

Villa Zorayda, 1883

History of Building:

  •   Franklin W. Smith built the Villa Zorayda as his winter home in 1883
  •    The building has Moorish Revival Architecture
  •     After 20 years of residency, the building was turned into a restaurant and club called the Zorayda Club
  •    1913- after Smiths death the building was sold to Abraham Mussallem
  •     1920- it became a gambling casino and speakeasy
  •      In the late 20s Mussallem and his wife decided to close the casino and use it as their home
  •     1933- They reopened the Villa Zorayda Museum due to its important history to St. Augustine

Decisions and Design Elements

In my final design, based on the Villa Zorayda and the Cathedral Basilica, I took ideas from each building.  I really admired the pillars and arches used in the Cathedral Basilica. I decided to use those design ideas on the front of my paper sculpture. I also took the window shapes from that building. When looking at the Villa Zorayda, the tiles really stuck out. I used tiles (squares of paper) throughout my design to carry that idea over. I also used the same door shape as used on the Villa Zorayda. For the shape of the overall sculpture, I got the back taller skinny section idea from the Villa Zorayda, and the more square "house-shaped" section is taken from the Cathedral Basilica.

Building Inspiration A

Memorial Presbyterian Church, 1989

History of Building:

  •              The congregation first constructed the building in January of 1825
  •              The construction took 5 years and finished in 1830
  •               In 1889 Henry Flagler dedicated this church to his daughter who passed away
  •               Flagler and his family are entombed in the Flagler family mausoleum within the church

Building Inspiration B

Casa Monica Hotel, 1888

History of Building:

  •         The Casa Monica Hotel opened on New Year’s Day of 1888
  •               Franklin W. Smith made the building
  •              The building has Moorish Revival and Spanish Baroque Architecture
  •              Smith sold the company to Henry Flagler and he renamed it the “Cordova Hotel”
  •               In 1932 the hotel closed due to the Great Depression
  •               In 1968 the St. Johns County Commission purchased the building to use as the County Courthouse and that’s what it was for the next 30 years
  •               In 1999 Richard Kessler bought the building and reopened it as the “Casa Monica Hoel”

Decisions and Design Elements

In my final design, based on the Memorial Presbyterian Church and the Casa Monica Hotel, I took ideas from each building.  The shape of my design is based on the octagonal dome on the top of the Memorial Presbyterian Church. I also incorporate arches in my design that I saw on the Church, and the circular mosaic design that is on the front of the church. From the Casa Monica Hotel, I was really inspired by the triangle/pyramid stair step design that is repeated throughout the building. I decided to do a design with this pattern on the bottom of every other size. I also decided to do a painted rough based on the hotel instead of the dome that the church has.
